Warner Robins, Georgia, August 13, 2026 -A shooting at Warner Robins High School left one student wounded while a teenage suspect who fled the scene was later taken into custody without further incident, according to police.
The altercation involving two ninth-graders occurred on Wednesday, August 12, just one week into the new school year. Law enforcement responded swiftly, with dozens of officers securing the area.
Sheriff Matt Moulton told reporters at an evening news conference that a verbal dispute between the students escalated into a physical fight inside a school bathroom at 2:15 p.m. One student was shot, and the suspect fled the campus.
A school resource officer arrived quickly, applied tourniquets to the wounded student’s injuries, and stayed until emergency services arrived. The injured student was taken to a hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
An hour later, the suspect was located and arrested in a neighbourhood approximately 800 metres from the school. Sheriff Moulton praised the school threat protocol, stating that training was followed perfectly and that what could have been a much worse incident was minimised to a single injury.
It was not immediately known whether the school has metal detectors in place. The sheriff declined further comment while the investigation continues.
Houston County Schools Superintendent Richard Rogers announced that the school will be closed for students on Thursday and Friday, with staff also off on Thursday. Crisis counsellors will be available at the school for staff on Friday and for students starting Monday.
“We’re going to focus on healing,” Mr Rogers said.
The shooting took place in Warner Robins, about 164 km southeast of Atlanta. No other injuries were reported.
